22 Jun Victorinox Pioneer Alox 2017 Limited Edition Knife
Although Victorinox produces clothing, watches and luggage these days, the company is most famously known for their Swiss Army Knives (SAK’s). This year’s Pioneer Alox Limited Edition is the celebration of the brand’s heritage. This medium pocket knife comes in a brilliant Olive Green color with a scale-like texture. It weighs a mere 2.5 oz. and utilizes the following eight tools:
- Large blade
- Reamer / Punch
- Can opener
- 3mm Screwdriver
- 5mm Screwdriver
- Bottle opener
- Wire stripper
- Key ring
Perhaps what truly differentiates the Alox from regular Swiss Army Knife models are the ribbed aluminum scales. Sure, it does make this pocketknife more visually attractive but I personally find this type of surface alluring for different reasons – durability and better grip. Furthermore, the aluminum features an oxide layer that is created by a process called anodic oxidation. Victorinox promises this extra coating provides protection against damage and corrosion.
Admittedly, nearly all of us will just use the large blade most of the time. However, a Swiss Army Knife is kept in the pocket for those rare moments when you do get to whip out a bottle opener or a screw driver. By the way, here’s a tip for you prospective owners of this neat piece of equipment. You can use the small slotted screwdriver blade located at the tip of a can opener to loosen Phillips screws. Apparently, not many owners of SAK’s know that.
You will be genuinely surprised at what the blade of the Pioneer Alox can handle. While some people will choose to use it as a box cutter or a letter opener, I’m here to tell you that whittling and light wood working will not be a problem. With that being said, if you like the outdoors, don’t make this your only contraption during an extended camping trip in the woods.
